As the festive cheer of Christmas began to settle, Dunkeswell Raceway came alive with the sound of kart engines for its much-anticipated Open Practice session on December 28th. It was the perfect opportunity for drivers to shake off the holiday indulgence and return to the track to fine-tune their skills ahead of the new season.
Cloud mist and drizzle had blanketed the Blackdown Hills since Christmas Eve, and this day was no exception. As I drove up from the valley floor to Dunkeswell Raceway, high on the Blackdowns, visibility was tricky. The damp track and dense mist made for a challenging morning behind the lens, from the infield, I could barely see the pit corner. Thankfully, by late morning, the weather began to ease, transitioning to an overcast but slightly damp day.
The post-Christmas session saw an impressive turnout, with drivers from various classes eager to make the most of the final practice day of 2024. Unlike the weather, the atmosphere was vibrant, with a mix of seasoned racers and enthusiastic newcomers creating an exciting energy around the paddock.
Festive Recovery Meets Competitive Focus:
For many, this practice session served as the ideal antidote to the slower pace of the Christmas break. Conversations in the paddock reflected a blend of holiday stories and racing ambitions, as drivers and teams discussed their goals for the coming year. Some spoke of plans to compete in championships, while others were simply enjoying the opportunity to hit the track one last time in 2024.
Highlights from the Day:
With no pressure of competition, many drivers used the session to work on their cornering precision, braking points, and overall consistency. It was clear that karting remains a beloved pastime for all ages, with younger siblings and parents equally invested in the dayβs action. Several drivers treated this session as a crucial step in their preparations for upcoming races, ensuring that their karts and skills were up to par. Testing new setups and tweaking areas added an extra layer of focus to the day.
A Great End to the Year:
The Dunkeswell Raceway Open Practice session proved to be the perfect way to cap off 2024, blending post-festivity relaxation with the adrenaline rush of karting.
For many, this was not just a day of practice but a statement of intent for the year ahead. As the paddock emptied and engines fell silent, the anticipation for what 2025 will bring to Dunkeswell Racewayβand the wider karting communityβwas palpable.
As for me, Iβll be at every race weekend, viewing all the action from behind the lens and capturing those unforgettable racing moments. From the roar of engines crossing the start line to the triumphant celebrations at the finish, my goal is to document the passion, intensity, and camaraderie that make karting such an incredible sport.
Hereβs to another thrilling year of racing. See you all at Dunkeswell Raceway in 2025!
