Changeable weather was the theme for the second DKC Open Test Day of January, as karters arrived at Dunkeswell Raceway for another challenging day of winter testing.

Despite an uncertain forecast, it was fantastic to see such a strong turnout, with over 60 drivers in attendance and the paddock once again buzzing with activity. Wrapped up against the conditions, drivers headed out onto a circuit that varied from damp to wet, with areas of standing water present early on. As the sessions progressed, plumes of spray from the wet tyres helped disperse some of the water, adding to the drama on track.

Under grey skies, the weather soon took another turn as periods of heavy rain drenched the circuit, leaving a glass-like sheen across the tarmac. The combination of spray, reflections, and standing water made for some striking visual moments. Experience played its part in choosing the best locations around the circuit to capture the most dramatic images, proving once again that challenging conditions often produce the strongest photographs.

From a photographer’s perspective, it was another demanding yet rewarding morning. Low light levels, fast-moving karts, and constantly changing grip levels pushed both equipment and technique. Moving between different trackside locations allowed me to make the most of the conditions and capture the raw atmosphere of winter testing.

Hats off to everyone who travelled from far and wide to take part in this second test day, enduring conditions that ranged from damp, to very damp, to wet and very wet. It was particularly encouraging to see novice karters across various classes taking their next steps in motorsport, undeterred by the testing weather.
